Abstract
This study aims to examine the types of stress that affect depression in the elderly living alone based on the stress process model and to verify whether social support and resilience mediate the relationship between stress and depression. The study participants were men and women aged 65 years or older living alone in G-city, Gyeongsangbuk-do. A total of 138 questionnaires collected through one-on-one interviews were analyzed. A multiple regression analysis was conducted in order to identify the effects of life event stress and daily hassles on depression. Meanwhile, the analysis method proposed by Baron and Kenny (1986) was used to examine the mediating effects of social support and resilience. The main findings of the study are as follows. First, daily hassles was found to have a direct effect on depression in older adults living alone. Second, social support mediated the process in which daily stress affected depression. Third, resilience was found to have a direct effect on depression in older adults living alone. These findings indicate the need to alleviate daily stress and strengthen social support to prevent depression among older adults living alone. Furthermore, improved resilience may also prevent depression among older adults living alone.
